MetaMask just launched Agent Wallet. The headline says AI agents can now transact on-chain autonomously. Underneath that headline, one number does more talking than all the press copy combined: $10,000 per month. That is the maximum transaction protection MetaMask will extend when an autonomous agent does something wrong. It is not an insurance policy. It is a pricing signal for the new trust assumptions being engineered into the AI-crypto stack. Before the product grabs another headline, that ceiling deserves a forensic look.
The context matters for anyone tracking the machine-user wave. MetaMask is the most recognizable self-custody wallet in Web3. It has been the default human gateway to Ethereum. Now it is building the same gateway for machines. Agent Wallet is an application-layer infrastructure piece that connects AI agent frameworks such as Claude Code and Codex to a smart contract wallet. It uses ERC-7821, a newer Ethereum standard that allows batch transactions and lets assets cover network fees without forcing users to hold native ETH. It launches with support for Hyperliquid, Robinhood Chain, and Monad. There is no native token. The revenue play is probably MetaMask Swap fees and, later, security services.

If an AI agent gets prompt-injected and drains a wallet of $100,000, the remaining $90,000 is not covered by the marketing narrative. By shipping Agent Wallet now, MetaMask is trying to remain the trusted entry point for an economy where the customer is a machine. That is strategically smart. It also carries a hidden risk: MetaMask's authority now extends beyond holding keys to judging what transactions are safe. In the old model, the user was the last line of defense. In this model, MetaMask's proprietary simulation engine is the last line of defense. We are shifting from a self-custody promise to a delegated-custody-of-judgment promise. The keys are probably still yours. The decision about what is dangerous is increasingly theirs.

Regulation creates another unspoken layer. A wallet itself is not a security. But the moment MetaMask offers transaction protection and sophisticated safety services, it starts looking less like a neutral tool and more like an adviser. No one should walk away from this launch thinking the AI-agent economy is solved. We have just moved the unsolved questions into a new layer. The old wallet model has a clear trust boundary: human signs, code executes. The new model has a fuzzy trust boundary: human defines permissions, machine proposes, security stack decides. That requires a serious leap of faith in MetaMask's tools.
